Shayne P. Carter
December 16, 2018 - February 17, 2019
A New Zealand born songwriter, singer and musician, Shayne P. Carter is best known for leading Straitjacket Fits from 1986–1994, and as the only permanent member of Dimmer (1995–2012).
Shayne has been inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame, and was awarded the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award at the 2008 New Zealand Music Awards. He also won Best Group and Best Rock Album (with Dimmer, 2004) at the New Zealand Music Awards.

Shayne P. Carter was our first artist-in-residency. His three-month program at Bangkok 1899 was dedicated to the exploration of merging modern pop music with Thai traditional music, highlighting the aspect of Bangkok 1899 as a cultural hub that creates relationships and social engagement through art.
During his time at Bangkok 1899, Carter collaborated with Morlam musician Piyanart “Pump” Jotikasthira (Studio Lam and The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band) along with the rhythm section of Toomturn Molam Group, and Chiang Mai based sound artist Arnont Nongyao. At the end of his residency, Shayne and his Thai collaborators performed in the soft opening event of Bangkok 1899.
“Our environments may be different, but no matter where you go, the artist’s heart stays the same.”
