Sak Yant Exhibition
June 14-29, 2025
In June 2025, Bangkok 1899 hosted a photo exhibition and a series of activities on the sacred Thai traditional practice of Sak Yant with Beam Musikaboonlert and Ajarn Krit Naeuttarang (Bangpu).
This exhibition celebrates and honors the artistry, craftsmanship, history and sacred magic of the Sak Yant heritage, as well as the lineage of Ajarn Krit. Through both visual and performative elements, the exhibition highlights the rich cultural significance and enduring legacy of this tradition.
This multimedia exhibition invites you into the powerful world of Sak Yant, the sacred art of traditional Thai tattooing. It is more than body art — it is an archive of spiritual devotion, protective magic and cultural identity. Through carefully curated artifacts, sacred objects and photography by Pakorn “Beam” Musikaboonlert and Ajahn Krit Naeuttarang (Bangpu), the exhibition brings this living tradition to life.
At its core, this exhibition explores the theme of “Living Culture.” Sak Yant is deeply rooted in the spiritual practices of Buddhism. Over the centuries, despite the forces of westernization and changing social attitudes in Thai culture, this sacred art has endured. Today, the Naeuttarang Sak Yant Lineage (currently led by Ajahn Krit Naeuttarang (Bangpu)) preserves its original techniques, materials and ceremonies. By sharing this knowledge, the exhibition seeks to challenge and dismantle outdated stigmas often associated with Sak Yant, honoring the dignity and legacy of its practitioners and recipients.
The exhibition highlights the rare and intricate process of creating Sak Yant ink and oil, a method unique to Naeuttarang Lineage. Grounded in the four elements — “Na Ma Pa Ta” (Earth, Water, Wind, Fire) — the process begins with oil extracted from 108 medicinal plant species. Pigments are drawn from sacred sacs and soot collected using tools etched with protective symbols. Every element is infused with spiritual energy and healing properties, requiring patience, devotion and deep respect.
Founded during the reign of King Rama IV and V, the Naeuttarang lineage traces back to Grandmaster Pu Saeng Chaiyasorn, a legendary figure in Thai spiritual tattooing. The tradition has been passed down master to disciples across generations, safeguarding the knowledge, rituals and beliefs that shape Sak Yant to this day.
Through intimate photographs, visitors can witness the sacred ceremony of tattooing as performed by Ajahn Krit, alongside portraits of proud Sak Yant bearers. These images capture not only the technical artistry, but also the profound emotional and spiritual connections formed through this ritual. For many, their tattoos represent protection, identity and belonging — a bond of camaraderie and kinship that transcends time.
