  • Models for Sustainability
Bangkok 1899 strives to be a living model of sustainability, leading by example. Through our quiet and thoughtful environment, we provide an alternative experience to the pervasive wastefulness of late-stage capitalism. In order to survive the ever-mounting threat of climate change, we plan to provide education and tools for the 21st century. Activities, workshops and discussions can activate the important social innovations we desperately need in an increasingly uncertain world.

Our heritage home has been slowly converted into a model of sustainability, employing various environmental technologies in our ecosystem. For example, New Delhi-based architect Monish Siripurapu is donating a small version of his biomimicry-based air-cooling system that was developed through a UN Environment startup grant. Our property configurations that advocate for a model of sustainability also includes the following:
  • Recycling and composting to divert waste away from landfills
  • Incorporating sustainable technologies into the property's overall system
  • Removing excess concrete and replacing them with green spaces
  • Adding insulation to cool the house by. 7 - 10°C
  • Adding ceiling fans to reduce air-conditioning usage
  • Updating electrical system to reduce energy consumptions (LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances, Mediterranean cooling system)
  • Adding climate innovation projects i.e. hydro cooling systems using ceramic cylinders

Furthermore, the daily operations of Bangkok 1899 and Na Projects apply the Zero Waste principle. We use produce from the vegetable garden grown in our backyard as well as ferment and recycle our food waste. One example is the fermentation of ripe papayas to be used in beverages sold at our café and using overcooked fruits to produce leavening agents for indigo dyes. All of these methods that we apply to our operations will help open up the world of sustainability to the general public, allowing them to better understand and equip themselves to live more sustainably.
